Followed the faint trail of sparks
Down low-lit streets
Headlights switched off
Radio still on
And the incessant chattering inside this crooked head
An ear pressed to the warped wood
Of an apartment door
It was barely minutes before the conversation stopped
Pearl-gripped indecision
The stuttering night paces into dawn
A matchbook, torn and spent
The corpses of a thousand cigarettes
Litter the scarred coffee table
Nursing a drink with a wounded paw
Some things heal better than others
And some things never do
