Party Waste by Neela Nandyal

Last weekend we had a party and I stole

compostable plates forks knives and spoons

from work with no intention

of composting, planning to toss everything

into the garbage bins in the alley.

I just wanted the free utensils,

a bow to sustainability had nothing

to do with it. But then Matt so earnest

offered to collect our refuse, deliver it

to the compost site and what could I do

but accept? Crumpled napkins, soiled plates

cradling forks still slick with hot sauce,

all sorted into brown paper bags

standing at attention like toy soldiers

in a Christmas display window.

Still standing there in the carport

long after Matt made his goodbyes,

tipsy and distracted,  eco-sensibilities muffled.

My dispassionate practicality triumphant

on my walk to the dumpster,

now ever so slightly tinged

with guilt.
