Menerva Tau is a an artist from Turkey whose work delves deep into the human psyche. The imagery she conjurs not only via photography but also her drawing and painting works flirt with the edges of sanity. The mists and fogs of subconscious thought and the realms of emotion are made manifest in a variety of studies of the human form.
On the surface, the models in each work are beautiful human specimens, perhaps glamorous, and yet in her vision they are twisted. This internal conflict is brought to the surface in her work with a painful beauty. Tau is not afraid of deep shadows and contrast. She does not shy away from dark imagery. Instead, she pushes deeper and further contorting, distorting so that the human form is reduced to a primal symbolism of self.
