Literary Orphans

Late Afternoon by Don Thompson

Night is coming—a pioneer

trudging behind a Prairie Schooner

covered with black canvas.

You want to walk along with it

and chat about a new life out West,

sharing implausible dreams.

But its slow pace is an illusion.

Already past St. Louis, nearing Salt Lake,

it will be here in an hour.
