Katie Perttunen

Katie2

Duties:
Killing your darlings.

BIO:
Born and raised in “Yoopsconsin,” Katie published her first poem in second grade in the PTA newsletter. As a child she wanted to write and become a children’s rights lawyer.

Studying creative writing and women’s studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as an undergraduate, and studying creative writing through Naropa University’s Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics, her career has led her from advocacy for victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault and organizing two V-Day events, to reporting and occasionally opining in “The Ironwood Daily Globe.”

Katie’s two daughter inspire her to make her corner of the world a better place through words- as the pen is mightier than the sword.
Her favorite poem of all time is “Howl,” by Allen Ginsberg. Katie loves raw, edgy work that pushes boundaries and contains that certain seed of genius that leaves the reader electrified.

A certifiable book junkie, Katie reads everything from blogs, to memoirs, nonfiction as well as fiction. “Cruddy” by Lynda Barry was the first book she read in her first creative writing class as an undergraduate, and it blew her mind open.

Currently, she is writing a story about a seven year old girl dragon superhero, at her daughter’s request to “write a story about me.”

Favorite books:
Allen Ginsberg’s ‘Howl‘ is her all time favorite poem. ‘Cruddy‘ by Lynda Barry is her favorite fiction book.
