Literary Orphans

Nintendo by Simon Lewis

This was the ultimate framed canvas of hard work:

an agitated gorilla dropping an infinite stock of barrels,

on a pixelated plumber scurrying, jumping, climbing

across girders, commissioned to save a princess

hanging from a hook on a crane, with chiptunes beeping

until the batteries died and the site dimmed into silence.

Years later, it is found at the bottom of a black bin bag,

under dungarees, stripy sweaters, Marvel Hero pyjamas,

its brilliant orange faded to a dull sunset, the lithium crusted.

The building site ruled by Donkey Kong is abandoned

overnight, its monochrome stories a childhood memory

the liquid crystal evaporated, the screen a ghost estate.
